Crores From Tourists, But Imam at Taj Mahal Gets Just ₹15 a Month — Unpaid for 3 Years!

Agra: The Taj Mahal — India’s most famous monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a global money-spinner — is hiding a shocking reality. While lakhs of visitors pay hefty entry fees that bring in crores every year, the imam of the Taj mosque is officially entitled to a salary of just ₹15 per month. Even that pittance hasn’t been paid for the last three years!

A Generational Duty, Not a Livelihood

Imam Syed Sadiq Ali, whose family has been leading prayers at the Taj for generations, continues the tradition despite this humiliation. “For the past three years, not a single rupee has come. The salary was always symbolic, but now even that has stopped. I teach children at a madrasa to survive, but offering prayers here is my ancestral duty — that’s why I still do it,” he said.

The Monument of Love, The Salary of Neglect

The mosque inside the Taj now opens only on Fridays, Eid, Bakrid, and during Ramadan. Yet, the stark disparity between the grandeur of the monument and the paltry recognition of its imam raises eyebrows. How can the world’s most celebrated monument, a symbol of eternal love, fail to honour even the dignity of its religious custodian?

Officials Keep Mum

When questioned, ASI Superintending Archaeologist Smita S. refused to comment and even declined to face the camera. The silence of authorities only deepens the mystery — is this neglect, oversight, or sheer apathy?

The glittering Taj continues to enchant millions. But behind its marble splendour lies a tale of indifference — an imam serving for generations, waiting for a salary that never comes.
