Abrupt shutdown for ‘Unity Mall’ construction triggers massive protest at Agra Collectorate; local guides warn of total economic collapse.

AGRA. The sudden closure of the Shilpgram premises due to the construction of a ‘Unity Mall’ has pushed local tour guides to the brink of a livelihood crisis. Operating without any prior notice, the unexpected shutdown has completely halted operations at the Tourist Guide Facilitation Center located in the Shilpgram parking lot, forcing a large number of affected guides to assemble at the Collectorate on Monday to demand immediate relief.

This sudden administrative decision comes as a major setback to a tourism fraternity already fighting for survival. According to local guides, Agra’s international tourism sector had barely begun to recover from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. To make matters worse, ongoing geopolitical tensions and volatility in the Middle East had already severely disrupted flights and triggered a decline in foreign tourist arrivals. The sudden closure of Shilpgram, a major hub for tourist facilitation and local commerce, threatens to further undermine their fragile recovery.

A delegation of the protesting guides met with the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Taj to present their grievances. Highlighting the financial distress caused by the sudden decision, the guides explained that they had been left without any means of income overnight. Acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, the administrative officers assured them that a swift and practical solution would be implemented at the earliest.

During the protest, the delegation also held talks with Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Yogendra Upadhyay, who arrived at the Collectorate auditorium for another scheduled meeting. The minister expressed concern over the guides’ prolonged financial hardships and assured them of immediate intervention to help resolve the issue.

Deepak Dan, President of the Uttar Pradesh Tourist Guides Welfare Association (Regd.), later stated that following discussions with administrative officials, Senior Regional Tourism Officer Shakti Singh informed the association that the administration had taken immediate cognizance of the matter and that directions for an appropriate resolution had already been issued.

Agra’s tourism was already crippled by the pandemic and further affected by the ongoing Middle East crisis. Shutting down Shilpgram without prior intimation has dealt a severe blow to our livelihoods. We are grateful to the Hon’ble Cabinet Minister, the Senior Regional Tourism Officer and the administrative team for promptly taking note of our concerns. Moving forward, our members will continue to stand together with discipline and dignity to safeguard our collective future.”
